I got a thing for puzzle games (and racing games and shooters and RPGs and...), so it's always nice to find a new game based on a totally new premise.

No hang on, this was made in 1989. I'm surprised this game had no cheap imitators over the decades! Just like Solomon's Key, it's now a dead way of designing puzzles in lateral thinking.

And boy, will you need a lot of lateral thinking! Nothing about Flipull is easy! At first it looks like a strange take on Puzznic (Brix for you DOS geeks), but it only takes a few minutes to realize you are dealing with one strange beast.

You have to smash similar tiles together, leaving one behind and picking up a new one. It's... really hard to explain. It's even harder to understand. I had to play the game for an hour just to get a grip. It's wildly different from other puzzle games, giving us veterans a steep learning curve.

However, there is a strategy to the gameplay. Soon you recognize certain formations and can intuit what needs to be done. It can become quite addictive!

The game is pretty much forgotten nowadays, used as filler on Taito Legends. I can see why, it's a pretty cerebral and slow-paced game. The arcade version has 2-player, but I can't find a damn working copy of it for download. Maybe one day.

In the meantime, Check out this nifty fan remake!
